The project Citizen participation against climate change: Teachers are trained on their roles and responsibilities

The youth citizen participation project in actions to fight against climate changes entered its operational phase a few days after the official launch. This Thursday, September 5, 2024, a capacity building workshop was initiated for Biology/Agriculture and Geography teachers in the beneficiary municipalities on their roles and responsibilities in the management and preservation of biodiversity.

The culture of citizenship and volunteerism cannot be successful without the involvement of teachers, who constitute powerful vectors for mindset change. Thus, their roles and responsibilities become essential for carrying out high-impact actions to fight against climate changes. For teachers, it is about inculcating young students to get involved voluntarily in community actions.

During the work of this meeting, the initiator of the project Mr YENTCHALE Yendouban firstly presented the project, the objectives, the expected results as well as the actors involved to the participants. Then, he insisted on the crucial role that teachers must play in the implementation and success of this project. He also noted the importance and necessity for teachers to engage and collaborate with grassroots structures, particularly development committees and parents, for the successful completion of the project activities.

The trainer, Professor FOLEGA Fousseni, Teacher and Researcher at the University of Lomé, congratulating the recipient of the IVLP prize, thanked the teachers for their participation, proof of their commitment to the success of the project activities. Then, he presented the Sustainable Development Objectives (SDOs) and the strategic axes of the ten-year ambition and the government roadmap in connection with the project before providing teachers with all the tools necessary for the implementation and management of biological diversity in situ in their respective schools. He also shared with the participants the techniques for rational management of school spaces and the types of plant species appropriate to the soil types.

The youth citizen participation in actions to fight against climate change project is an initiative of YENTCHALE Yendouban, recipient of the IVLP prize and funded by the office of educational and cultural affairs of the American Department of State in partnership with Méridien International Center on one hand and on the other hand the US Embassy and USAID.

In the days to come, awareness sessions on good environmental protection attitudes will be held for the benefit of school stakeholders in the localities concerned.
